The World Series of Blackjack

While you may have heard of the World Series of Poker, it is less likely that you have heard of the World Series of Blackjack. However, it does exist and, like its poker cousin, it is a tournament held in Las Vegas.

The World Series of Blackjack has actually been created by the television network GSN. They set up the closed tournament, so if you want to play you need to be either invited, or win a number of satellite tournaments, to run on their network. In fact it now televises the WSOB in hour long shows as part of its Vegas Night slot.

In order to play the WSOB, each player is given $100,000 in chips. To start with they have to bet a minimum of $1,000 but can't exceed $5,000 with their bets. It is also played with six decks of cards and unlike in casino based Blackjack each player is one "Burger King Power Chip" per round. This means that they can use the chip to swap one of their cards with one from the shoe.

Another twist in the WSOB game is the addition of two knockout cards. If they are drawn they will knockout the player with the lowest amount of chips at the end of that hand. The knockout cards also serve to raise the minimum bet " once the first one is drawn the minimum bet level is raised to $2,500 and when the second one has been drawn it goes up again to $5,000. When they are drawn the deck is also reshuffled which will mix up the order of cards drawn. However, if there are only limited amounts of players left when the knockout card is drawn, four players when the first knockout card is drawn and three when the second comes up, then no one is eliminated.

However, the minimum bets will still increase. Players at the WSOB also can double down or split double-down and insure for less than their bet.

What's more there is also a time limit on the WSOB. If after 25 hands there is no clear winner then the person with the most chips will be declared the winner.
